Phil Hagerman, RPh
Chief Executive Officer
Phil Hagerman received his pharmacy degree from Ferris State University in 1975 and started Diplomat with his father, Dale Hagerman, that same year. Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy is now the nation’s largest privately held specialty pharmacy, with revenues exceeding $1.1 billion in 2012. With 800+ employees, Diplomat is rapidly expanding its staff count under Phil’s direction to handle the increasing demand for specialty pharmacy services. In 2012, Diplomat was highlighted as one of the nation’s top 100 job creators in Inc. magazine’s inaugural Hire Power Awards, and was recognized as one of Michigan’s top workplaces by the Detroit Free Press. Diplomat has also been on Inc. magazine’s list of the nation’s fastest-growing companies since 2008. These accomplishments are a reflection of Phil’s commitment to retaining Diplomat’s positive work culture amid explosive growth.
Phil is a frequent speaker at state and national pharmacy conferences and reports on a variety of topics, including the changing role of the pharmacist under health reform, and developing and marketing a specialty pharmacy practice. He received the Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award from The Michigan Pharmacists Association in 1999.
He is a respected leader in both pharmacy and executive management circles. Phil received the Blue Chip Award for Outstanding Business Practices from the United States Chamber of Commerce in 2000, was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the Michigan and Northwest Ohio Region in 2010, and in 2011, he was named Grant Thornton Leader and Innovator of the Year by the Great Lakes Innovation and Technology Report. In 2012, Phil was invited by the White House Business Council and Business Forward to attend a one-day forum on jobs and the economy. He also was named one of 13 Michiganders to Watch in 2013 by MLive Media Group, a collaborative network of local and statewide Michigan news outlets.
Phil has worked as a consultant for the United States Department of Justice and served as an expert witness in cases of drug diversion. He is an adjunct instructor of Clinical Pharmacy for Ferris State University and received an honorary doctorate degree from Baker College of Flint in 2012.
Gary W. Kadlec
As President, Gary supports and drives Operations, Clinical Services, Managed Care, New Business Development, and Sales and Marketing. He is a third generation pharmacist who received his B.S. in pharmacy and honorary Doctor of Science from Ferris State University and his M.B.A. from Michigan State University.
He began his career as a pharmacist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan in 1971. From 1976 to 1995 Gary was the owner and President of Specialized Pharmacy Services in Livonia, Michigan. In 1995, Specialized was acquired by Omnicare, Inc. and Gary served as Regional and then Senior Regional Vice President until 2004. In 2004, Gary joined excelleRx based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as its COO and then CEO/President before joining Diplomat.
Gary is involved in numerous pharmacy organizations and has served as President of the Michigan Pharmacists Association and President and then Treasurer of the American Pharmacists Association. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Michigan Pharmacists Association Pharmacist of the Year Award in 1997 and the American Pharmacists Association Hugo H. Schaefer Award in 2010.
Jeffrey M. Rowe, RPh
Co-Owner + Executive Vice President, Operations
Jeff joined Diplomat in 1993 as a staff pharmacist concentrating on building the compounding and complementary services. Currently, he is Sr. Vice President of Operations with a focus on accreditation, contracting and regulation. Jeff’s broad range of knowledge includes diabetes, asthma, and other areas of disease state management, and he is an expert in the ﬁelds of compounding custom medications and complementary medicine.
Jeff enjoys working with patients to improve their knowledge base and often lectures to healthcare workers and patients on the subjects of compounding, men’s health, diabetes, and asthma. He completed the NCPA Diabetes Certiﬁcate Program and is a graduate of the Asthma Educator Course at Mott Community College.
Before taking on his role at Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy, Jeff owned two successful independent pharmacies. He now serves as an adjunct faculty member for the College of Pharmacy at Ferris State University. He is a past treasurer of the Michigan Pharmacy Association and past president of the Genesee County Pharmacy Association. Jeff also volunteers at the Genesee County Free Clinic.
Sean M. Whelan, CPA
Chief Financial Officer
Sean is responsible for all financial matters for Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy. Prior to joining Diplomat, he was the Chief Financial Officer of InfuSystem Holdings, Inc. (INFU), a publicly traded healthcare services company located in Madison Heights, MI. While there, he played an instrumental role in ensuring InfuSystem’s success in diverse areas such as profitable revenue growth, capital markets, debt raising, and acquisition and integration. He also oversaw the Information Technology and Human Resources organizations during periods of rapid growth.
Prior to joining InfuSystem, Sean held senior finance positions with Ford Motor Company from 1996 through 2007, including serving as accounting director for Automotive Components Holdings, LLC, a Ford subsidiary, where he had direct oversight, and financial and divestiture responsibility for the $5.0 billion entity. Sean has a bachelor of business administration degree and a master of accounting degree, both from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. He received his CPA certificate in 1995, his Certified Internal Auditor certificate in 1996, and has been 6-Sigma Black Belt certified since 2000.
Atheer A. Kaddis, PharmD
Senior Vice President, Sales + Business Development
Dr. Kaddis brings our sales, business development, and trade relations under one authority, allowing for complete coordination of our strategies within these important business areas.
Dr. Kaddis began his career as a staff pharmacist at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan. He continued his hospital pharmacy experience as a clinical oncology specialist at Grace Hospital in Detroit; he also worked in the community pharmacy setting.
Dr. Kaddis joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in 1997 as Clinical Program Manager dedicated to the Ford Motor Company account and also had drug information responsibilities. Dr. Kaddis joined Merck-Medco (now Medco Health) in 2000 as Associate Director in Clinical Account Management. He returned to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as Director of Pharmacy Services Clinical with responsibilities including formulary development, clinical program development, utilization management programs, specialty pharmacy programs, and pay for performance programs.
Dr. Kaddis is a member of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy and the Michigan Pharmacists Association. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Wayne State University in 1994.
Robert Fleckenstein, MBA
Vice President, Operations
Robert is a veteran executive in the pharmacy industry. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the National Distribution Center, Patient Service Operations, Call Center, Oncology Department, and other patient-facing services at Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy’s Corporate Headquarters. He is actively involved in the design and development of employee training, compliance, and other executive management functions.
Robert has held several executive positions in the healthcare industry, including Vice President of Pharmacy Operations at Allion Healthcare, Inc. and CVS ProCare Mail Service; Regional Manager, Oncology Pharmaceutical Services at US Oncology; Director of Pharmacy and Customer Service at Stadtlander Drug Company; and General Manager at Healthcare Management Inc./Murray Pharmacy. He holds an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, Katz School of Business and a bachelor of science degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. In addition, Robert is a member of the American Society of Hospital Personnel (ASHPA), the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), and Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Vice President, Information Technology + Marketing
Jennifer is responsible for the streamlined operations and strategic planning of the IT and Marketing Department to ensure it aligns and drives the business objectives of the organization.
Before joining Diplomat, Jennifer served as Senior Business Manager of Pharmacy & Vision at Walmart.com, and was accountable for the end to end business managing products and services, customer experience and cross-functional partnerships. Prior to this role, she served as Business Strategy Manager in the Imaging & Printing Group of Hewlett-Packard where she managed the growth of the worldwide OEM business and was charged with developing business models, program portfolios and directing contract negotiations.
Jennifer received her primary degree from University of California, San Diego and her MBA from University of California, Irvine, Paul Merage School of Business.
Lance D. Neill
Vice President, Corporate Services
Lance is responsible for the strategic approaches and administration of Diplomat’s analytics, business intelligence, and contract management areas, helping align the organization’s business objectives with its long-term goals.
Prior to joining Diplomat earlier this year, Neill served as director of commercial contracting and channel management at Wal-Mart Stores Inc., where he oversaw pharmacy contracting and network management for PBM’s and large MCO’s, and was accountable for $13 billion in third-party prescription claim reimbursements. He also held other management roles while at Walmart, where he was responsible for pharmacy analytics, reporting, claims and audits.
Prior to his work at Walmart, Neill held a number of senior financial management positions within the healthcare and manufacturing industries. He also taught healthcare contracting as an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas School of Law. Neill holds a bachelor’s degree in information technology from the University of Phoenix and is green belt certified in Lean Six Sigma.
Gary Rice, RPh, MS, MBA, CSP
Vice President, Clinical Services
Gary is responsible for providing industry leading, clinical support services to our patients and clients.
Prior to joining Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy in June of 2011, Gary was Vice President of Operations at ITSRx, where he provided operational and clinical leadership and development for the specialty and retail pharmacies. Gary also served as Director of Specialty Clinical Management at MedImpact Healthcare Systems, Inc., where he directed the clinical protocol development of 15 specialty therapy categories, oncology strategy, clinical oversight of specialty medication providers, and specialty pharmacy sales management. Before MedImpact, he was Vice President of Retail and Ancillary Services, and Director of Pharmaceutical Services at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston, Texas.
Gary earned his bachelor of science in pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences in Boston. He received a masters of science in pharmacy from the University of Houston and completed his masters in business administration from the University of Phoenix.
Hetty Lima, BSPharm, RPh, FASHP
Vice President, Specialty Infusion Services
Hetty leads the sales and operations for Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy’s specialty infused product line, including the national nursing network.
An accomplished healthcare executive with over 27 years of home infusion/specialty pharmacy experience, Hetty has extensive experience in turnaround situations for healthcare product and service arenas; biopharmaceutical product launch; business development; marketing and market strategy; sales management; and federal and state healthcare lobbying. She has held a number of executive-level positions within the healthcare industry, including positions at Baxter Healthcare, CVS/Caremark’s Specialty Pharmacy division, and Coram’s Hemophilia Services division.
Hetty is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, and she is also the past president of the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) Section of Home Care Practitioners. She has lectured at national pharmacy and nursing meetings and has published extensively on the clinical and practical aspects of home infusion and specialty pharmacy. Her work has appeared in numerous pharmacy and nursing journals and pharmaceutical texts.
Thomas E. Michaels
Vice President, Sales
Tom has over 30 years of pharmaceutical sales, training and marketing experience.
His most recent position was Managing Director in the Michigan/Indiana region for Novartis Pharmaceuticals, where he led the sales efforts across the full portfolio of primary care products. Tom has been a leader in talent development and has a rich history of sponsoring programs for diversity & inclusion, women in leadership, and management development.
Tom received his degree in marketing from Central Michigan University and has completed executive educational training in management, leadership, marketing strategy, and finance from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.
Ryan E. Ruzziconi
Vice President + General Counsel
Ryan is responsible for all legal and healthcare regulatory matters affecting Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy, its subsidiaries, and its divisions. He has diverse experience in healthcare law, contracting, employment law, and corporate matters.
Prior to joining Diplomat, Ryan served as Assistant General Counsel for an international manufacturing company headquartered in central Wisconsin. He also spent several years as an attorney with a regional law firm in Wisconsin. In 2012, Ryan was awarded the General and In-House Counsel Award (for a privately-held company) by Crain’s Detroit Business Magazine.
Ryan graduated from Marquette University Law School (J.D. 2003) and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (B.S. 1999). He also holds law licenses in both Michigan and Wisconsin. Ryan is certified in healthcare compliance (CHC) by the National Health Care Compliance Association.
Ryan is also involved in several community organizations and activities, including serving as a commissioner on the Oxford Village Planning Commission.
Cheryl Allen, RPh, BSPharm, MBA
Vice President, Business Development + Industry Relations
In her role, Cheryl is responsible for all facets of new business development and industry relations, where she leads the Diplomat team in finding partnerships and crafting healthcare solutions. Cheryl also leads corporate efforts in identifying new opportunities for Diplomat. For patients, she seeks ways to continually improve our care. For external stakeholders, she strives to help us keep producing financial results.
Cheryl brings more than 20 years of industry experience, with work in independent, compounding and specialty pharmacy, as well as in managed care consulting and healthcare IT. Before joining Diplomat, Cheryl worked as the Senior Director of Clinical Services at Sanovia Corporation, where she managed new product development and sales support. Prior to her tenure at Sanovia, she held roles with Priority HealthCare as a Pharmacist-in-Charge for oncology and Lead Pharmacist for pain management and compounding. Cheryl also founded C. Allen & Associates, a firm focused on managed care consulting, and Eden Drug Company, an independent pharmacy with a compounding focus.
Cheryl earned her bachelor of science in pharmacy at Samford University, and her MBA at Saint Joseph’s University Erivan K. Haub School of Business with a focus in pharmaceutical and healthcare marketing.
