We understand the unique needs of patients with all forms of myositis and help them through treatment with 24/7 clinical support and and education. While all myopathies can cause muscle weakness, each variety presents itself differently, often causing inflammation, fatigue and rashes. Although there are no outright cures, symptom management is important, which is why we make sure treatments arrive on time and accurately. We’re here to empower every member of the health care team with support and regular communication. And we’re here to help patients live their best lives.
One of the first steps after a myositis diagnosis is understanding the condition. The information on this site and linked sites is not meant to replace your physician’s advice, medical care or a diagnosis. If you have questions about your disease, please ask your prescriber.
Myositis, also known as myopathy, includes various chronic inflammatory disorders affecting muscle tissue, beginning with larger muscle groups. While the disorders differ in significant ways, each involves the slow progression of muscle weakness.
Physical exertion, including standing in place for an extended period, might leave patients fatigued. As myositis progresses, more muscles are affected. It’s possible for swallowing and breathing to become a challenge. Other potential side effects include muscle tenderness or a low level of constant muscle pain.
The most common types of myositis include, polymyositis, which often causes muscle and mobility loss; dermatomyositis, often accompanied by rashes; inclusion body myositis (IBM), which can lead to muscle weakness; and juvenile myositis, which can cause irreversible shortening of muscles around joints.
Although most adults will not experience a cure for myositis, many of its symptoms can be treated.
