We support patients with pemphigus and pemphigoid through treatment and customized education. We understand the unique needs of patients and the concerns of their caregivers. Because symptoms of pemphigus and pemphigoid can be be painful and isolating, we’re here to do whatever we can to help patients cope. We understand that treating the condition quickly is important in preventing damaging long-term effects. That’s why we make sure treatments arrive on time, help uncover funding options and answer any questions quickly. We support patients from initial diagnosis treatment through the longer-term management of the disease. Our goal is to keep patients adherent throughout therapy, hopefully achieving complete remission. Throughout their time with us, we are in consistent communication with the patient and their entire care team. Together, we work to create the very best care for each patient.

Pemphigus and Pemphigoid

One of the first steps after a pemphigus and pemphigoid diagnosis is understanding the condition. The information on this site and linked sites is not meant to replace your physician’s advice, medical care or a diagnosis. If you have questions about your disease, please ask your prescriber.

Overview

Pemphigus and pemphigoid are rare autoimmune diseases involving rashes and blistering of the skin or mucous membranes. Pemphigus and pemphigoid involve the immune system targeting the “glue” that holds together your skin cells or—if it occurs in the mouth, nose or throat—mucous membranes. The resulting blisters are painful and can be widespread.

It’s not clear what causes the autoimmune attack, though some people might be genetically predisposed. Environmental factors such as radiation, medications or UV light might play a role. Men and women are equally affected. Most patients are middle-aged or older, though the disease is seen in children and young adults. Pemphigus is not contagious.

Pemphigus and pemphigoid have several similarities. They are rare, result in blisters and can be difficult to diagnose. They can also be fatal.

What distinguishes the two? First, pemphigoid typically affects older adults, while pemphigus can affect people at any age. Second, in pemphigoid, the blisters are rigid and difficult to break.

Pemphigus and pemphigoid affect people differently, depending on where they manifest. Patients might experience blisters in various locations around their body, including eyes, genitals, mouth, nose and throat.

Treatment has improved greatly for patients. Today, it is rarely fatal and often manageable, especially if it’s caught early. It’s possible for patients to recover fully, though this can take months or even years. Anyone with ongoing blistering on their skin or mouth should consult a doctor.
